A crossbite happens when the upper and lower teeth grow at different rates, or times, or even when the lower jaw grows disproportionately with the upper jaw.
An example of a crossbite would be if the lower jaw is out of line with the upper jaw (kind of like a box that won’t close right because one of the hinges is bent).
