kansas city invisalignThere are a lot of problems you can run into while wearing braces. The wires, the brackets, the bands, the spacers…there are so many parts involved! If something goes wrong, it’s ideal to make an appointment with our Kansas City Invisalign expert for repairs and to check that everything is properly in place. However, in the meantime, there are some steps you can take to handle problems until your appointment:

#1: What To Do If Your Wire Breaks

If your wire breaks, it is no longer effective in moving your teeth. It’s imperative that you make an appointment with our orthodontist to fix this issue. However, a broken wire is usually painful or annoying, as the wire may poke into your cheek or gums and create a sore.

Until you see our orthodontist, try pushing the wire back up with a pencil to secure it. If this doesn’t work, use a bit of orthodontic wax to cover the end. If the wire has already created a sore, rinse with antiseptic or saltwater to prevent infection. Never try to cut the wire yourself.

#2: If Your Bracket Becomes Loose

Brackets tend to come loose after eating things that you’re not supposed to, like crunchy or chewy foods. There is a layer of resin covering your tooth that the bracket is set on, and these tough foods can disrupt the stability of the resin. The bracket may move or break as a result.

Make an appointment with our orthodontist in the case of a broken or loose bracket. In the meantime, you can use some orthodontic wax to cover the bracket to prevent it from poking your cheek or tongue.

#3: What To Do If Your Spacers Become Loose

The intention of spacers is to create gaps in your teeth for bands to be placed. If your spacers become loose or fall out, make an appointment with our orthodontist. It is likely that you’re ready to have your bands put on!

braces in kansas cityYou put a lot of effort into your orthodontic health and the last thing you want is to have stained teeth! Our expert for braces in Kansas City has outlined some tips below on how to prevent stains and keep your teeth healthy and bright.

#1: Brush & Floss Twice Each Day

Use a whitening toothpaste and mouthwash twice a day to stop staining before it starts. Be sure to use a whitening toothpaste that also contains fluoride, as fluoride protects the teeth, reduces enamel loss and prevents tooth decay. Keep up on flossing twice daily to remove plaque, bacteria, and ensure that your gums are healthy.

#2: Avoid Certain Foods & Drinks That Damage & Stain the Teeth

Acidic foods and drinks contribute to the weakening and erosion of enamel. As enamel erodes, the underlying dentin is exposed, making the teeth appear more yellow and more prone to stains. Drinks such as soda, coffee, tea and wine are acidic and contain compounds that stain the teeth, so it is best to avoid them.

If you do consume acidic foods or beverages, be sure to rinse your mouth with water immediately after.

#3: Kick Bad Habits that Stain Your Teeth & Damage Enamel

Smoking is a bad habit that can prevent you from attaining the bright smile you want. Smoking tobacco not only causes damage to the gums and surrounding tissues in your mouth, but it also leaves brown stains on your teeth that are hard to remove.

Other habits to kick are teeth grinding and clenching, as the pressure will wear down enamel over time and lead to staining. Grinding can also cause damage to orthodontic devices.

Since grinding sometimes only occurs during sleep and you may be unaware of it, you should have your bite checked and have a nightguard made to protect your teeth if there is evidence of grinding.

pediatric dentist in raymoreSummer is over, and school is starting up again! It’s a hectic time: keeping track of new schedules for the year, planning after-school activities, and scheduling orthodontic appointments. When making lists for back-to-school shopping for your child with braces, our pediatric dentist in Raymore wants you to keep the tips below in mind.

#1: Healthy Snacks

It’s important to teach your child healthy eating habits while keeping their braces in mind. Avoid sugary foods, as the teeth are more prone to decay with braces on, and hard, chewy, or crunchy snacks like nuts, pretzels or fruit gummies as they can damage brackets and irritate the gums. Some great healthy snacks for your child with braces are foods such as:

  • Steamed vegetables
  • Soft crackers
  • Soft fruits like kiwis and strawberries
  • Yogurt
  • Soft Cheeses
  • Hard-boiled eggs

Pack your child’s lunch with soft sandwiches like banana or easy-to-chew lunch meat alongside these braces-safe snacks.

#2: Travel-Sized Dental Care Packages

Brushing and flossing are integral to the health of your child’s teeth. For kids with braces, it’s crucial to do it after every meal, as food particles can easily become trapped between teeth and stick to brackets.

Send your child to school with a travel-sized dental package to encourage their dental routine. The package should contain a small tube of toothpaste, a mini-toothbrush and a roll of floss. With this on hand, it will make it convenient for your child to care for their braces between classes.

#3: Mouth Protection for Those Who Play Sports

It is vital for your child to protect their teeth and braces when playing sports. Mouthguards protect the teeth from injury and can prevent damage to braces. Here at Burleson Orthodontics, we can make custom-fitted devices and mouthguards to protect your child’s teeth. Call us today to learn more!

Chill Out on Ice Chewing

Relaxing with a cool beverage on a hot day can be incredibly refreshing. The small, melty ice cubes clinking around at the bottom of your glass quickly cool you down and quench your thirst. Even better, chewing the ice that’s keeping your beverage cool, right?

If you wear braces you probably already know this practice is a no-no, says our oral health team at Burleson Orthodontics in Kansas City. If you find yourself absently – and happily – chewing away at a couple ice cubes after you’ve finished a drink, you’re not alone. There are many people who enjoy chewing ice not just incidentally but as a matter of habit. It can be oddly satisfying to crunch your way through an ice cube, agrees our trusted orthodontist.

Do You Enjoy Crunching Ice?

According to our knowledgeable Kansas City orthodontics team, however, it’s a BAD habit that many people have. And – though it may be enjoyable to you – it can certainly be annoying to the people around you. The need to chew ice can also be a sign of a more serious medical condition. (Be sure to check with your doctor if you have concerns.) It’s not so great for your teeth either, which is why the American Dental Association recommends avoiding persistent ice chewing to prevent tooth injuries such as cracked or chipped teeth, enamel damage, or gum injuries. Your teeth are simply not built for the wear and tear caused by eating bags or trays of ice every day and can wreak havoc on your orthodontic work.

Love Shaved Ice or Slushies?

You can continue to enjoy them, says Dr. Burleson, (although those type of sugary treats should be limited too!) The damage to braces is usually caused by chomping on the hunks of ice rattling around in the bottom of your glass, or worse, ice cubes straight from the freezer.

What’s an Ice Chewer to Do?

If you have severe ice cravings, you need to find out why. It’s important to seek proper diagnosis and treatment. Any behavior that is not done in moderation can cause problems and chewing ice is one of them. Additionally, if you’re having jaw pain or toothaches, let Burleson Orthodontics in Kansas City know, as our orthodontist may be able to help you avoid more serious damage to your teeth and jaw.

Burleson Orthodontics suggests that you try to let the ice dissolve in your mouth rather than chewing. Or, you could try sucking on semi-melted ice slivers instead of cubes. For patients with Invisalign, you have the more convenient option of slipping off your aligners and soothing your craving for a hard icy crunch by eating cold carrots, celery sticks or apples. These crunchy hard foods should still be avoided with braces, reminds Dr. Burleson.

If chewing on ice is becoming a problem in your life, or if you have any other questions on the topic, feel free to talk with a member of our orthodontics team in Kansas City, MO, by calling 816.759.0123. Our experienced doctor may be able to help you with this issue by preventing or repairing any damage to your teeth.

liberty mo orthodontistsSo, you’ve wrapped up your orthodontic treatment and are looking forward to a beautiful, new smile, but then our Liberty, MO, orthodontists break the news that you still have to wear a retainer! As if wearing braces for two years wasn’t enough, now you’re required to wear a clunky metal device – when will your mouth be back to normal?

At Burleson Orthodontics, we understand the urgency behind wanting a straight smile as quickly as possible, but it’s important that you follow the proper steps in order to make your orthodontic treatment last a lifetime. That includes wearing your retainer for as long as our experienced orthodontic specialist recommends. Luckily, with the advancements in modern orthodontia, retainers are no longer the clunky devices they once were.

Keep Your Teeth in Position with Your Retainer Advises Our Liberty Orthodontist

The general purpose of a retainer is to prevent your teeth from shifting after your braces have been removed. Our team at Burleson Orthodontics will provide you with a custom-fitted retainer that will provide your teeth with the stability they need to remain straight. Depending on your specific needs, you will be given one of the types described below.

Hawley Retainers

Hawley retainers are composed of an adjustable metal wire that holds your teeth in place, plus an acrylic arch that’s held to the roof of the mouth. These are the most common types of retainers used today.

Essix Retainers

According to our Liberty orthodontist, this type of retainer is molded to fit over your teeth and is usually made of clear material, so it’s less noticeable when wearing.

Fixed Retainers

Mainly used for those with serious teeth alignment issues, fixed retainers are surgically placed on the inner side of the teeth beneath the tongue.

kansas city orthodontistWarmer weather is here and with its arrival comes fun times and vacations for many of us. Even though a stay at the beach or a cross-country road trip should be exciting and care-free, it’s important to always make your oral hygiene a priority, especially when you have braces.

Be Care-Free & Maintain Healthy Teeth Says Our Kansas City Orthodontist

Regardless of where you’re heading, when you hit the road this travel season, keep the following tips in mind:

Be Prepared

In case of an emergency, it’s always a good idea to research area orthodontists. That way, if you experience a broken bracket or wire, you don’t have to wait days or weeks to see your regular orthodontist.

Maintain Hygiene

Keeping up your oral hygiene while on vacation can be tricky, especially when your days are packed with fun activities that take your mind elsewhere. We recommend packing a travel bag with convenient-sized products like orthodontic wax, toothpaste, mouthwash, and dental floss. This will make it easier for you to stay on track with your regular routine while away from home.

Avoid Harmful Foods

One of the most exciting parts of going on vacation is getting to try interesting foods you wouldn’t normally eat, right? Have fun experimenting, but also keep in mind there are certain types of foods you should avoid while wearing braces, even when you’re on vacation. Try to steer clear of hard and chewy foods, plus foods that are abundantly sugary, or you risk wreaking havoc on your braces and your healthy teeth.

invisalign in kansas city moThe short answer is no – but our expert for Invisalign in Kansas City, MO, thinks you should undergo orthodontic treatment with someone who IS highly trained and skilled in this specialty field of dentistry. After all – as our current health care environment continues to become more and more specialized – you are not likely to consult a knee doctor for your shoulder injury, are you?

Our Experienced Orthodontist Explains

In fact, all orthodontists are dentists, but only 6% of dentists are orthodontists. While dentists are experts with general oral health, orthodontists are specially trained dentists with several extra years of complex residency training in order to prevent and correct misalignment of your teeth and jaws. You could say that we specialize in creating smiles! While dentists can identify any potential problems with the growth and development of your child’s teeth during a routine office visit, they usually refer patients to an orthodontist for braces, Invisalign, or other more advanced orthodontic work.

If you’re not sure if your dental provider is an orthodontist, look for the seal of the American Association of Orthodontists (AAO) as only orthodontic specialists can belong to the AAO.

Check Out Our Extensive Smile Gallery!

Although every mouth is different, chances are that when you choose an experienced orthodontic team, they have successfully treated thousands of cases similar to yours! One sign of a great specialist is that he or she can show you plenty of “before and after” pictures of transformed smiles. The best part of our job is creating life-changing smiles, and we strive to give each and every patient a spectacular result!

In the world of modern orthodontia, there are multiple available braces options to choose from and even more things to take into consideration when determining which type of braces to get. According to our orthodontist in Kansas City, the severity of your case, total treatment time, and overall cost are just a few main factors to look at before making a choice. Fortunately, there’s one style of braces that offers the most comprehensive benefits – and it’s been around for years!

Our Kansas City Orthodontist Share the Benefits of Traditional Metal Braces

Yes, you read that right. Traditional, metal braces have loads to offer and are the perfect option for many patients – even with all the other options available today.

Cost-Effective

Traditional metal braces are generally less expensive because they’re made of materials that cost less to produce and maintain. Depending on the severity of your specific case, they could be the most cost-effective treatment method, especially if you have insurance.

Durable

Made of stainless steel, metal braces are the strongest and most durable treatment option available. This means you won’t have to deal with extra trips to Burleson Orthodontics to fix broken brackets or wires. They’re also stain-resistant, so you won’t have to worry about them yellowing over time.

Less Treatment Time

Even though methods like Invisalign promise a straight smile in less time, traditional metal braces are more appropriate for the majority of cases and actually produce results quicker because of the increased control our orthodontist in Kansas City has over teeth movement.
