Braces + Dentistry for Children and Teens

If you’re looking for top-notch orthodontic treatment for your child, you’re in the right place. Braces are a great option to straighten your child’s teeth and improve their bite and appearance. But how long do braces take and when should your child start? Our orthodontist explains more below.

How Long Do They Take?

Our short answer is, “it depends.” Most children wear braces for one to two years. After they come off, we will fit your child with a special retainer to ensure they keep their best smile. The length of treatment depends on age, growth, the scope of treatment, and the desired method (traditional or hidden braces, for example). Commitment to treatment and aftercare is critical so the teeth don’t revert to their prior positions.

When Should We Start?

It is ideal to have the treatment done earlier rather than later — if your child is approaching the age of seven, you should schedule their initial appointment. Braces work best (and fastest) in early-to-mid childhood, while the face and mouth are still developing. The roof of the mouth hasn’t fused yet and it is easier and less painful to move the teeth to their desired position.

What Treatments Are Available?

There are a few different types of braces treatments available, including traditional metal braces, ceramic braces, and hidden braces. Traditional metal braces are a reliable way to get the smile you want and are cost-effective, but incognito braces offer a more discreet option. Talk to our orthodontist today to discuss our options for your child’s orthodontic treatment.
