When considering orthodontic treatment for your child, there are many factors to consider. These usually include the length of treatment, cost, and the type of braces desired. However, you may also be asking, “when should I start orthodontic treatment?” Our orthodontist is here to explain how general time frames for treatment work and what to expect.
Best Time for Treatment
The ideal time to have orthodontic treatment is in childhood. Since the teeth, gums, face, and jaw are still growing and haven’t fused yet, they move easier and treatment is less painful. It is recommended that your child sees an orthodontist by the age of 7 to check for any abnormalities. Our orthodontist will never recommend braces for children that do not need them. In fact, many early evaluations do not result in braces!
Signs & Symptoms
Your child may exhibit signs that their teeth are misaligned or that their jaws are not developing properly. Some symptoms that may indicate a need for braces include:
- Protruding teeth
- Mouth breathing
- Difficulty chewing or speaking
- Thumb sucking
- Crowding or misplaced teeth
- Teeth that meet abnormally or don’t meet at all
- Jaws that shift, protrude or make sounds
- Grinding or clenching of teeth
Types of Treatments
Some common issues found in the early evaluation include crowded teeth, widely spaced teeth, crossbite (teeth meet improperly), overbite (the upper jaw overlaps the lower jaw), and underbite (the lower jaw juts out).
We offer treatment for all types of orthodontic problems. Traditional metal braces are a great option as they are proven to be effective and can treat almost any misalignment problem. Spacers or expanders can help widen the roof of the mouth and assist in overbites or underbites. If you are concerned about your child’s dental and/or orthodontic health, please schedule an appointment with our orthodontist!
